What is a Mystic?

My first experience with the mystical was when I was walking to school in the fourth grade. It was a cold winter in the suburbs of Chicago. I could see my breath as I walked to school in my boots and snow pants. About five blocks away from my home, a wind whipped up and began to form a miniature snow tornado. I watched in astonishment as the tiny particles of snow danced and swirled. I marveled at the unseen forces that we are completely unaware of but surround us at all times.

I could feel a quiet impersonal presence coupled with a sense of awe and wonder.

People in spiritual circles often make a big deal out of “mystical experiences”. People go to classes, study with gurus and travel halfway around the world chasing after even the glimpse of such an experience. But to me the reality is much more mundane; grounded yet fantastic. To me it is rediscovering the quiet childlike wonder of seeing the world through new eyes. It is the simplicity of nature and it is all around us.
